A Prayer for Our Country

Let us pray,

God, our refuge and strength, you have bound us together in a common life.  In all our conflicts, help us to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, to listen for your voice amid competing claims, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Scripture Reading:  Paul’s Letter to the Romans 8:35-39

“35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written,  “For your sake we are being killed all day long;  we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Did you catch that?  “Nor rulers, nor things, present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

In this unfathomable moment in our history, this scripture tells us that nothing the world offers can separate us from God’s love in Jesus Christ.  God is with us now and will remain with us always.
